According to DAU analytics, there is a significant upward trend showing the Defense Acquisition Workforce is becoming more mobile and using smartphones and tablets to access DAU's website and other online resources. Recognizing the workforces' need for more mobile-friendly content, DAU has developed a mobile app prototype that leverages evolving technology. Our new app includes the convenience of push notifications and alert indicators for new content; personalization settings to see only the content you desire; maps and directions to DAU locations which integrate with your device's native capabilities, and offline viewing of content.
All DAU faculty and staff, the Defense Acquisition Workforce, and the entire acquisition community are invited to participate in phase II beta testing of our new mobile app prototype. If you would like to participate, and have your own Apple (iOS) device, send an email to WLD-ILC@dau.mil with "Mobile App Testing Volunteer" in the subject line. Testing will be available to the first 10,000 volunteers requesting to participate. Once you receive your Apple invitation from TestFlight, you will need to download the app within five days or your invitation may expire. Don't forget to complete the "App Feedback" survey to ensure we hear your voice.
Features the participants are testing include personalized settings in the News module which allow the workforce to view the DAU news, events, or career gateway blogs of their choice. The News module is currently limited to career fields that have a blog on their career gateway website. The participants will also be testing offline access to view the News module in airplane mode and the ability to have the news read aloud to them from the app.
The Maps module is prototyped for the DAU Fort Belvoir, VA campus and has one partial setting for the campus in Huntsville, AL. Personalized settings for other DAU campuses will be added once the prototype is approved. The Maps module is designed to assist with driving directions to the DAU campuses and for Fort Belvoir, it is integrated with the class schedules for walking directions from the student parking lots to the buildings and classrooms. The app also assists in finding relevant points of interest, such as the Howell Auditorium, Hirsch Center and George's Café, the onsite cafeteria. There are a few points of interest for the Huntsville locations -search for restaurants to find them.
The Training module currently mirrors the DAU iCatalog.
The Info module currently consists of Classrooms, Class Schedules, Gate Information, DAU Operating Status, Contact Information, DAU Locations, and App Feedback. The Classrooms and Class Schedules are integrated with the maps and app search and the Operating Status is integrated with alert indicator and push notification features.
The Resources module is currently designed using a combination of online and offline access techniques. The participants will be testing the offline access capability for viewing the DAU ACQuipedia and Glossary. Other resources are linked to the mobile versions of their websites or the e-Pub/iBook version of the Defense Acquisition Guidebook (DAG). If you don't already have an e-Pub reader on your phone, click on the blue icon next to each DAG chapter to download one. You can also select the resources you want to see on your app by using the on / off setting.
The AR Maps is an augmented reality module which provides participants with live walking directions for specific DAU Fort Belvoir location markers by accessing your camera phone. The closer you are to a building, the more information you get with the marker you see.
If you have an Apple (iOS) device and would like to participate in phase II beta testing, send an email to WLD-ILC@dau.mil, subject: "Mobile App Testing Volunteer", and someone will send you instructions to download the app prototype.
If you look in the Info module on the mobile app, you will find a link to an "App Feedback" survey to let us know what you like, what you dislike, what are we missing, and what should we improve. You may also click here to take the same survey. We value your feedback as it will help us deliver a better, final product to you.
DAU completed initial development and testing of the mobile app prototype for Apple (iOS) devices in December. Phase I of the testing consisted of a very small group of DAU participants at Fort Belvoir. These participants assisted in testing the functionality and usability of the preliminary six modules: News, Maps, Training, Info, Augmented Reality (AR) Maps, and Resources. In the prototype design, DAU has included only a limited set of functionality for testing the concept and feasibility.
Starting in January 2018, DAU conducted phase II testing with logistics, program management, acquisition and engineering students at Fort Belvoir courses. DAU will complete phase II testing with the Fort Belvoir contracting students in March.
Once testing is completed, DAU will assess the results and move forward with an iOS production app. The final app will include more functionality, more locations, and more content based in part on the feedback we get from this pilot (final deployment estimated in November 2018). DAU plans to build an Android version of the app (estimation 2019).
