Q: Can I use Acker Library after I leave DAU?
A: The Acker Library's public access Internet site http://www.dau.mil/library is open to everyone. From this site, you may search the library’s online catalog. Many of the catalog records link directly to the digital, full text of publications. An array of other helpful features and services is also available on this site. Individuals with access to Fort Belvoir may visit the Acker Library and are asked to sign in at the circulation desk.
Q: Who may check out materials from the Acker Library?
A: Only DAU faculty, staff and resident students have full borrowing privileges.
Q: What are the limited borrowing privileges of DAU local alumni living in the Fort Belvoir area?
A: Local alumni may register for limited borrowing privileges at the Acker Library’s Circulation Desk. Registration is only for one year but this can be extended upon request. Local Point of Contact (POC) information and email address must be provided when registering. Local alumni may borrow books, reports and non-current periodicals for two weeks. Local alumni may borrow media materials for a weekend (from Friday to Monday). Items must be picked up and returned in person.
Q: What options are available using Acker Library’s Inter-Library Loan arrangements via OCLC?
A: DAU Alumni and others not currently affiliated with DAU may borrow books, reports and non-current periodicals using the Inter-Library loan arrangements via OCLC. Your local military librarian or public library may use the OCLC system to borrow these materials for you. Acker Library’s OCLC code is DSM. Lending time is 4 weeks – subject to immediate recall.
Q: Do you loan media materials?
A: No. Media materials are for DAU faculty, staff, student and local alumni use. We do not loan media materials by interlibrary loan or otherwise.
Q: What is my "user ID" for the library?
A: Only DAU faculty, staff and students have “user ID’s” which are embedded on their DAU ID badge. The circulation staff (703) 805-2293 can provide assistance on this matter.
Q: How can I get access to Acker Library’s e-book collection?
A: Access to Acker Library’s e-book collection from netLibrary is restricted to DAU faculty, staff and students. Registration is limited to DAU faculty, staff and students located on the Fort Belvoir campus of DAU. Once a user is registered with netLibrary, he or she must remember their ID and password. Call the Library Circulation desk at (703) 805-2293 if you need help with e-books.
Q: Where can I get DAU publications?
A: Most in-print publications from DAU Press are available free online. Visit the DAU Press for complete information. That page also provides information about titles available for purchase in hard copy from the Government Printing Office, the Defense Technical Information Center, or the National Technical Information Service.
DAU students and government employees can receive a single free copy from the Distribution Center Bldg. 231, at DAU Northeast/Capital Region. Q: How do I apply for a DAU course?
A: You must apply for a course through your agency's application system: Army, Navy/USMC, Air Force, Civilian Acquisition Workforce Employees Assigned to DoD Components Outside MILDEPS, Federal Employees working for Dept. of Transportation, Federal employees working for non-DoD federal agencies, Industry employees working on DoD contracts, and a special process for foreign students. All of these application programs are neatly packaged in the Apply for a Course page of the DAU's public web site. You cannot apply for DAU courses from the DAU Virtual Campus site.
